Car Hire

All major car rental companies have depots in Adelaide as do smaller, locally based companies. All provide a range of vehicles for hire from both city and airport depots. Car rental firms require a current driver's licence and a deposit or credit card imprint. Generally, the minimum age requirement is 25 years, however some local companies have a minimum requirement of 21 years. All Australian States and Territories recognise driving licences issued in overseas countries. Licences that are not written in English must be accompanied by an English translation or an International Driving Permit.

Maps, self-drive guides and advice are available from motoring organizations or the vehicle hire companies. These include the NRMA in Sydney, RACV in Melbourne and RAA in Adelaide. A few pointers to keep in mind:

  • All Australian vehicles are right hand drive and driving is on the LEFT-hand side of the road.
  • Road distances are measured in kilometres and speeds in kilometres per hour.
  • The speed limit in South Australia is 100km/h (unless stated otherwise) in the country and 50km/h in towns and the Adelaide metropolitan area. In some Adelaide suburbs the limit is 40km/h.
  • Most road signs use symbols similar to those in common use internationally.
  • Fuel (petrol/gas) is available in unleaded, lead replacement, LPG and diesel. Service stations are generally open from 7am to 6pm, with many city outlets open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Most stations are self-service, but some do offer driveway service, especially in regional areas.
  • The use of seat belts by the driver and passengers is mandatory at all times if fitted to the vehicle.
  • Full licenced drivers must not exceed a blood alcohol level of .05, or they may be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
  • It is illegal to talk on your mobile phone when driving, unless you are using a hands free kit, or a car kit.
